Betty Lee
Dr. Betty Lee has many years experience on biosecurity and non-proliferation issues. She was a Biosecurity Fellow of the Johns Hopkins Health Security Center and participated in the SynBiobeta 2018 Conference with more than twenty-five international fellows chosen from a competitive program. She educates industries and academia on dual use technology and participates in outreach. She organized the first Emerging Technologies-Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Conference in 2023 for industry and government representatives. She is knowledgeable on non-proliferation issues of bioweapons. Dr. Lee participates as a judge for the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) jamboree on an annual basis. In addition, she participated in the policy review of “Optimizing the Security of Biological Select Agents and Toxins in the United States” in 2010. She has a PhD from Dartmouth Medical School, USA, M.S. Clinical Chemistry from the University of Windsor, Canada and M.S. Biochemistry from LSU Medical Center, USA. Dr. Lee completed her postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health.

The importance of biocontainment of engineered microbes for environmental release (EMERs) is often discussed, but why and when is biocontainment really needed? This session will include short talks on our technical capabilities and needs for containing EMERs, the infrastructure needed and available for testing and measuring the efficacy of biocontainment systems, obstacles and potential solutions for achieving regulatory clarity, and the ethical, legal, and social implications on different publics of decisions to use or not use EMERs.
