Luis Cascao Pereira
Luis Cascão Pereira is the Head of Digital Biology at IFF, an industrial biotechnology pioneer who first commercialized engineered laundry enzymes in the 80's. Luis is passionate about turning bench-scale research into commercial solutions that solve the world's toughest problems. Under his leadership at IFF, and previously DuPont, Danisco, and Genencor, he managed global protein and strain engineering and biomanufacture scale-up teams that launched over a dozen engineered protein products in consumer care, food, and biofuels, including the largest volume engineered enzyme on the market to enable cold wash detergents and combat climate change. Luis leads the strategy and business opportunities for IFF in Digital Biology - the convergence of AI with biotechnology at scale - combining our application and domain knowledge in protein engineering with key partnerships to build new products. He is an advisor to startups, the White House, and National Labs. He obtained a PhD in biochemical engineering at Berkeley, a diploma in chemical engineering from the EPFL in Switzerland, and is a Harvard Business School alum.

Assessing Progress in AI for Protein Engineering: Where Are We Now, and Where Are We Going?
-
Protein engineering is the most active frontier for AI in biotech. We are seeing the emergence of models that can make "zero shot" predictions of antibodies, and new variants of enzymes that would take millions of years for Evolution to produce. How should we be evaluating these models and their designs? What can we expect from the field of AI protein design moving forward?
